This striking sustainable development for Gallions Housing Association in south east London. The development is located on two separate sites adjoining the existing Poplar Place estate. The site of the redundant Boiler House has become the ‘Rotunda’, a circular tower accommodating 40 apartments on eight floors alongside which is a two-storey terrace of seven houses.
On the other site the ‘Boxing Club’ has been redeveloped with a ‘cascade’ block of 14 duplex apartments and 48 flats located in stepped terraces, surmounted by ‘green’ roofs.
Both multi-storey buildings have a concrete frame that utilises a variant of the tunnel form Modern Method of Construction to create an efficient load bearing cellular structure with high thermal mass that was fast to construct and reduced waste to a minimum.
